Aw, here we are. How to use Google Analytics? This is the number one question you should be asking if you have a brand new website or are new to search engine marketing. So we’ve taken the first steps and listed them out for you. Truly, it’s very easy + the more you play with Google the happier they’ll be.

Before you get started with Google Analytics you’ll need:

  •  An email address (preferably a dedicated gmail account).
  • Access to your Website Backend Dashboard.
  • Potentially, you’ll need to access your domain or hosting account.

Get Started with Google Analytics

Use Google Analytics to collect basic data from your website:

Step 1. Create or sign in to your Analytics account:

  • Go to google.com/analytics
  • Do one of the following:
    • To create an account, click Start for free.
    • To sign in to your account, Click Sign in to Analytics.

Step 2Set up a property in your Analytics account.

Your website or your APP is considered your “property”. You must register your property with Google Analytics to get a unique tracking code for your website. Google see your website/app as the collection point. You can have many properties in one analytics account.

Step 3. Add the tracking code to your website so you can collect data in your Analytics property

Step 4. Confirm your Property is added. 

Advanced Configuration

Set up a reporting view in your property. When you register your Google Analytics Property, GA creates your 1st reporting view called “All Website Data”. This is the most basic job of Google Analytics. Have a look around your account. You can create other reporting views to filter perspectives on your data; for example, you might want to see all data except from your company’s internal IP addresses, or all data associated with a specific sales region.

 

Set up a Property in Google Analytics.

You can add up to 50 properties to each Analytics account. To raise this limit, reach out to Digital Task Force.

Also, you’ll need Edit permission on the account to add properties.

Here’s how to to set up a property:

Step 1. Sign in to Google Analytics..

Step 2. Click Admin.

Step 3. In the ACCOUNT column, use the menu to select the account to which you want to add the property. If you have a lot of accounts, use the search box to help you find the right one.

Step 4. In the PROPERTY column, click +Create PropertyIf you don’t have Edit permission on the account, you won’t see the +Create Property option. Check that you’ve selected the correct account in the ACCOUNT column.

Step 5. Select Web.

Step 6. Enter a name for the property.

Step 7. Enter the website URL. Select the protocol (http or https). Enter the domain name, with no characters following the name (e.g., www.example.com, not www.example.com/).

Step 8. Select the industry category. Google uses this information when you choose to share benchmarking data.

Step 9. Select the reporting time zone. Analytics uses this as the day boundary for your reports regardless of where the data originates.

Step 10. Click Create.

Step 11. Accept the Analytics Terms of Service and the Data Processing Amendment if prompted, and click Finish.

When you create a Web property, Analytics also creates the first reporting view, with the default name All Web Site Data.

 

Add Google Analytics Tracking Code to Website

Now that you’ve set up a Web property in Google Analytics. You’ll need to add the Tracking Code to your shit. Here’s how.

For WordPress sites, the easiest way to do this is by adding Google Site Kit Plugin to your website.

Step 1. Navigate to your WordPress Dashboard. www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

Step 2. Navigate to Plugins

Step 3. Click “Add New”

Step 4. Search “Google Site Kit”

Step 5. Click Install

Step 6. Click Activate

Step 7. Follow the prompts to login to your Google Analytics Account.

Download the Analytics app

Once you have installed the tracking code on your site or app, and have configured your Analytics account, download the Analytics app from Google Play so you can take Analytics reporting with you anywhere (well, anywhere you have a connection).
