Understanding Google My Business Insights

One of the best tools that comes with a Google My Business listings is Insights. Insights give you an inside look at how people find your business listing online. Along with that, due to the fact that many customers find businesses through a Google Search or Maps, Insights focuses on how customers use Search and Maps to find your listing, and what they do once they find it.

There is a vast amount of data to be found within Insights on Google My Business. Keep reading to understand all the different types of insights.

What Are Google My Business Insights?

The insights page within your Google My Business dashboard provides business owners with customer engagement data that is derived from your specific Google My Business listing. The metrics shown include information such as:

  1. How many viewers your listing had
  2. How and where customers are finding your listing
  3. The specific actions that customers are taking on your listing (calling your business, finding directions to your business, or visiting your website)

How Are Customers Searching For My Business?

One of the pieces of data that GMB Insights shows, is how customers are searching for your business. Are customers using a direct search or a discovery search to find your listing?

DIRECT SEARCHES

A direct search refers to a customer who directly searched for your business name or address. These types of searches are usually from people already familiar with your business or they heard about it from another form of advertising.

DISCOVERY SEARCHES

A discovery search refers to a customer who searched for a category, product, or service that you offer, and your listing appeared. Impressions from a discovery search refer to generic searches such as “restaurant near me” or “dry cleaners open now”.

BRANDED SEARCHES

Branded searches refers to customer who searched for your brand or a brand related to your business. This category will only appear if your listing has appeared at least once for a branded search.

ALL SEARCHES

The total number of direct, discovery, and branded searches on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

Where Are Customers Viewing My Business On Google?

The image shown below is a graph which shows business owners insights as to exactly where customers are coming from a traditional Google Search or a search on Google Maps. Keep in mind, if you are receiving high traffic from Google Maps, that generally means that customers are most likely looking for your business on their mobile device.

What Are Customer Actions?

The Customer Actions graph shown in Image 1.4  gives you an overview of the actions customers took on your GMB listing. Unlike the previous insights explained, these are actual interactions customers had with your GMB listing. Also, this graph is broken down into action type: 1) Visit Website, 2)Request Directions, &  3)Calls you.

You can then take a look at each action further in Image 1.4.

Google My Business Direction Requests

Image 1.5 shows an image of  data that displays the number of times someone requested directions to your business location. The data displayed here is without a doubt some of the most valuable information for a local business. Since all the requests are broken down by zip code, city, or state, you can use this information to better target your ads to a specific region.

Google My Business Phone Calls

Phone call actions are how many times a customer called your business through your Google My Business listing. The total calls graph shown in image 1.6 helps to show the time of day or day of the week customers call your business the most. This information is great for knowing when people are looking at your listings most, and you can target those times with ads or social media posts and stories.

Image 1.7 shows the most popular times and days during the week for your business. Here you can find a breakdown of when your business gets the most foot traffic. This information is found through tracking data on people’s phones, similar to how Google tracks driving traffic. This data is important to pay attention to when it comes to scheduling posts on social media.

Google My Business Popular Times

Image 1.7 shows the most popular times and days during the week for your business. Here you can find a breakdown of when your business gets the most foot traffic. This information is found through tracking data on people’s phones, similar to how Google tracks driving traffic. This data is important to pay attention to when it comes to scheduling posts on social media.

Google My Business Photos

GMB photos insights shows how many times your photos are viewed. Google counts a view as any photos seen in the knowledge panel (impressions) or clicked by a customer.

Photo Quantity

Photo Quantity shows you how many photos you’ve uploaded compared to how many photos your customers uploaded.

If your customers are uploading more photos than you, it’s probably a good idea to review those photos to make sure they’re an accurate representation of your business.
